Facebook journalism, IWFM, WAN IFRA, SAFE IREX and ARIJ will discuss the needs and opportunities to better combat harassement, abuse and misuse of power inside the Arab Media industry.

Questions remain about how much learning depends on the physical presence of a teacher, but ARIJ has had major successes with distance learning in investigative journalism. In February the American University of Beirut and International Media Support will launch a basic journalism curriculum intended for reporters in closed areas such as Yemen, Gaza, and Syria. This panel, made up of pioneers in the field, will discuss best practices and lessons learned. University lecturers and journalism students will get tips and tricks, and hear about different forms of distance learning.

After them, Khaled Harouji, ARIJ coach and former deputy chief editor at Yemen’s Al-Thawar newspaper; Lina Attala, chief editor at Mada Masr; and Lina Chawaf, chief editor at Radio Rozana, will talk about challenges journalists are facing in Yemen, Egypt and Syria.  Rana Sabbagh, executive director of ARIJ will talk about the challenges ARIJ faced in reporting on much of the Arab world in the past year. This session is moderated by Rawan Damen, ARIJ coach and independent filmmaker and media trainer.
