The Business Of Journalism: Best Practices For Sustainable Newsrooms- Hosted by GIJN https://arij18.arij.net/sessions/the-business-of-journalism-best-practices-for-sustainable-newsrooms/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 08:15:19 +0000 https://arij18.arij.net/?post_type=sessions&p=1091 This workshop, for nonprofits, start-ups, and new media, will zero in on the business practices and revenue models underlying successful investigative journalism projects, and explore how such organizations can diversify revenue, especially in more challenging parts of the world such as the Middle East. We will also discuss innovative practices for providing a strong base and financial structure that allows for investigative reporting.  Three global experts and representatives from three investigative journalism organizations operating in the Middle East will share ideas about fundraising, audience engagement and revenue, and commercial income. GIJN is sponsoring this workshop.

Agenda

Making newsrooms sustainable is a challenge for everyone in the media today. No matter how brilliant one’s journalism, it won’t be sustainable unless it’s backed by a business plan that takes into account revenue, audience, distribution and more.

This workshop is for nonprofits, start-ups, and new media on the business practices and revenue models underlying successful investigative journalism enterprises. What are the keys to a successful investigative newsroom? How can such organisations diversify revenue, especially in regions with repressive governments, poor ad markets, and struggling economies? What innovative practices will provide a strong base and financial structure to do important investigative journalism? We’ll look at practical ways of generating revenue from different sources: audiences, donors, events, membership and commercial opportunities.

This GIJN workshop will bring together global experts and investigative journalism organisations to discuss best practices on increasing revenue in smart, sustainable ways. It will also give those attending the opportunity to share their own experiences and raise questions. In addition, you’ll have a chance to talk to the global experts in one-on-one meetings.

Part One focuses on three essential sources of revenue: fundraising, audience engagement & revenue, and commercial income – both an overview and in specific cases.

Part Two looks at how to develop an effective business/funding model and why it matters.

Part Three is a chance to brainstorm about the issues facing your organisation.

14:00 – 15:30 Part 1:  The main sources of Revenue – Key issues

Objectives: to identify practical opportunities and key tips for growing revenues; identify challenges that need to be addressed and improve our understanding of revenue models for investigative and in-depth journalism.
